Imperialism begins (1778 - 1875)
- In 1766, Captain James Cook was assigned by the Royal Society of England to conduct a scientific voyage in the Pacific Ocean by recording the path of the planet Venus in order for the society to determine longitude.
- In 1778, Captain Cook "discovered" Hawaii for the Europeans and named them the Sandwich Islands in honor of his sponsor. Cook published the Island and named the natives Owyhee.
- In his second trip in 1779, Cook kidnapped the king of Hawaii and abducted temple idols. He demanded money in return of what he stole. The islanders reacted violently and killed Captain Cook.
- British influence in Hawaii can be seen in the design of the flag which has the Union Jack and the Europeans also brought with them many diseases the would kill a lot of natives.
- Captain Cook documented his voyage in a book he published to the world. This book gave fame to Hawaii and made it look attractable to many explorers, traders, whalers and missionaries.

Europeans discover Hawaii
- During the 1780's to the 1800's, there was a war for power in Hawaii were many chiefs from different tribes fought against each other.
- In 1795, King Kamehameha the Great was able to defeat the other tribes and unify Hawaii into one Kingdom. He created a dynasty that would rule Hawaii until 1872.
- King Kamehameha III was the first Christian King that ruled Hawaii. He was in favor of immigration and trade.
- After King Kamehameha V did not assign a heir, an election took place in the Island.
King Kamehameha I
- In 1874, the elections created many riots so the U.S and Britain had to interfere. They gave the power to the Kalakaua family.
